About us

Rooted here. Built to last.

Mt. Zion Capital is a family-owned company in Union, Kentucky that buys, runs, and grows good businesses.

Our story

Why we do this.

Every year, good Northern Kentucky businesses close or get sold to buyers from far away, not because the business stopped working, but because the owner was ready to retire and there was no one local to carry it on. We started Mt. Zion Capital to be that local buyer: someone who knows the area, respects what was built, and intends to own it, invest in it, and grow it for decades.

We're not a fund with a five-year clock, and we're not brokers. We buy with our own capital, we operate what we own, and we measure success in years and relationships, not in quick exits. Alongside the operating companies, our family of companies includes Psalm 23 Realty, our real-estate arm, which buys, improves, and manages residential property with the same long-term approach.

If you're an owner thinking about what comes next for your company, we'd be glad to talk. Reach out any time.

The name

“Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever.”
Psalm 125:1

We named the company after the kind of owner we intend to be: steady, rooted, and permanent.

Leadership

An engineer's approach to ownership.

Matt Grubbs

Founder & Managing Member

Matt is a mechanical engineer who spent more than two decades designing products and leading engineering teams across Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati. He started on the manufacturing floor at a tier-one automotive supplier in Walton, building production lines for BMW and Honda. He then spent eleven years in new product development in Florence, where he was named an inventor on fifteen U.S. patent applications. Most recently he led the mechanical design and drafting team at L3Harris in Cincinnati, developing safety-critical hardware for aerospace and defense.

That career taught him how good companies actually run: disciplined processes, honest numbers, and people who are trusted to do their work well. Mt. Zion Capital applies the same standard to ownership. Buy a good business, run it with discipline, and make it better every year: stronger systems, a stronger team, more customers, more capability.

Matt holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He lives in Union, Kentucky with his family.
